Our final grade calculator helps you quickly and accurately calculate your final grade based on your current performance and the weight of your final exam. This calculator allows you to input your current grade, the weightage of the final exam and your expected final exam grade to see how these factors will affect your final grade.

What is a final grade?

The final grade is the total score a student receives for the entire course, which is usually awarded at the end of each semester or an academic year. The final grade reflects the student's overall performance across all graded components, such as homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and final exams. The final grade is provided by calculating how much each of these components contributes to the total or final grade.

Why final grades matter

Final grades have a very high impact on your GPA, academic status, and eligibility for scholarships, internships, and graduation. Using this calculator allows you to calculate how well you are doing in the course and how much you need to score before the final exam.

How to calculate the final grade

i) What score do i need?

What score do i need in the final exam option is useful if you know your current grade in the course, the grade you want to achieve and and the percentage weight of the final exam. The formula for this calculations is;

F = Gw −(1−Wf ) × Gc/Wf

Where; F = Final exam score you needed, Gw = Grade you want, Gc = Current grade and Wf = Final exam weight.

For example, If your current grade is = 82%, your desired grade = is 90% and final exam weight = 30%. The calculation would be 85−(1−0.30) × 82/0.30 = 92%.

ii) What is my final grade?

This method is very helpful when you already know your current grade, your final exam score and weight of the final exam. The formula for calculating final grade for the class is;

FG = (CG × (1−W)) + (FE × W)

Where; FG = final grade, CG = current grade, FE = final exam score and W = final exam weight.

For example: If your current grade is 88%, final exam score is 75% and final exam weight is 40%. The calculation would be FG = (85×0.60) + (90 × 0.40) = 51+36 = 87%.

How to calculate exam Weight

To calculate the weight of an exam, assignment or any academic component of your course, you need to calculate how much that particular component contributes to your final grade. The weight of the component is usually provided by a teacher/professor or mentioned in your course syllabus. Still, if it is not provided directly, you can calculate it based on the points provided. The formula for the calculation is as follows;

Weight = Points for Component/Total Course Points

For example; Your final exam is worth 300 points and total course points is 1000. Weight = 300/1000 = 30%

Steps to calculate final grade

Enter your current grade in the input field. This is your average from the completed exams, assignments, tests and quizzes before the final exam.

  1. Option 1: if you want to know the score you need on the final exam to achieve a specific final grade, enter the target final grade.
  2. Option 2: If you have already taken the final exam or have an estimated score, enter the grade you want or expect to get on the final exam.
  3. Enter how much the final exam is worth as a percentage of your total grade. If you don't know the exam weight, we have elaborated on a simple method to calculate it.

    After entering all the data, the calculator will instantly show the score you need on the final (if you chose option 1) or your final course grade (if you choose option 2).
