Subtract Time Calculator
Created by
Eon CalculatorThe subtract time calculator’s primary goal is to calculate the difference between two time durations (e.g., 08:30:15 – 02:45:30) and deliver the result in the HH:MM: SS format. Here is a clear explanation of how this subtract time calculator works, examples, steps to use this calculator, and a few questions.
When subtracting time durations, you separately handle hours, minutes, and seconds. You must borrow value from the higher units to make the subtraction work if needed.
What is Subtracting time?
Subtracting time refers to calculating the difference between two points of time. Subtracting time is usually done to find out how much time has passed between two events or to find out how much time remains until a future event. Time subtraction can involve hours, minutes, seconds, and even days, depending on the context.
How this calculator works
When subtracting time durations, you separately handle hours, minutes, and seconds. You must borrow value from the higher units to make the subtraction work if needed.
Subtract the Seconds
Start by subtracting the second second time from the seconds of the first time. If the seconds of the first time are smaller than those of the second time (Seconds A < Seconds B), borrow 1 minute (60 seconds) from the minutes column.
New Seconds = Seconds A – Seconds B
For example: Time 1: 07:15:40 – Time 2: 03:50:50: Seconds: 40 – 50 = 40 + 60 – 50 = 50 seconds.
Subtract the Minutes
Next, subtract the minutes of the second time from the minutes of the first time. If the minutes of the first time are smaller than the second value (Minutes A < Minutes B), borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from the hours column. Adjust the minutes and proceed with the subtraction.
New Minutes = Minutes A – Minutes B
For example: T15 – 50 = 15 – 1 = 14, 14 + 60 = 74, 74 – 50 = 24 minutes.
Subtract the Hours
Finally, subtract the hours of the second time from those of the first time. Borrowing value is not applicable since hours represent the most significant unit.
New Hours = Hours A – Hours B
For example: Hours: 7 – 1 = 6, 6 – 3 = 3 hours and final Result: 03:24:50.
How to use this calculator
Step 1: Enter the first-time duration (HH:MM: SS) and the second-time duration (HH:MM: SS) you want to subtract. Ensure both times are entered in the format.
Step 2: Once both times are entered, click calculate, and the calculator will automatically process the subtraction. The calculator will display the result in the HH:MM: SS format.
Step 3: If you want to perform another calculation, use the “Clear” button to remove the previous inputs. Then, enter new values and repeat the steps.
